Real Wedding: Building a cohesive stationery suite

There’s a moment in every wedding journey when someone stops whatever they’re doing to open an envelope, lean in to read a sign, or find their seat - and in that small, quiet pause everything about the day comes together. For S&J's lavender-themed wedding at The Arches in Halifax this summer, we wanted that pause to feel calm, elegant and unfussy. The stationery didn’t shout. It simply set the tone.

Every detail in this suite was designed to feel connected - simple in form, thoughtful in flow. Each piece played its part in creating a calm, cohesive experience from the moment guests opened their envelopes to the moment they found their seats.

Here’s the tidy list of bespoke pieces we designed and why each mattered:

> Save the Date - A quiet introduction to the day and the cohesive design. Clean typography and just enough space to let the details breathe.

> Invitation - The heart of the suite. Elegant layout, beautifully balanced white space, and subtle line art that hinted at the lavender theme without ever feeling heavy.

> RSVP Card - Compact, refined and practical. Designed to match the invitation perfectly, it kept the process effortless for guests while completing the set.

> Welcome Sign/Order of the Day - A combination of both to keep the signage minimal.

> Seating Chart - A clean layout that made navigating the reception simple. Every name sat comfortably.

> Table Numbers and Place Cards - Consistent type and spacing brought quiet rhythm to the tablescape. The design added structure without stealing attention from the florals or table styling.

> Small Signs - Coordinating notes for Cards & Gifts and Guest Book tied everything together, ensuring every touchpoint, big or small, felt intentional.

What we created: the full, simple wedding stationery suite

Every element of this suite was designed to feel calm, connected, and unmistakably personal.

We began with typography that felt like them: a contemporary handwritten style for their names and headings to bring a sense of softness, paired with a clean serif font for the finer details. That combination struck the perfect balance between relaxed and refined, and elegant without ever feeling overly formal.

The save the dates were a particular favourite; printed magnets that guests could display on their fridge doors! It was such a simple idea, but it made sure the date stayed visible and felt special every time someone walked by.

Each invitation and RSVP card was printed digitally on 250gsm cotton stock, chosen for its gentle texture and natural weight. It gave every card substance without heaviness. Tactile enough to feel special, but still simple and minimal in presentation.

To bring the suite together, we wrapped everything in a vellum belly band featuring the couple’s initials and the delicate lavender line art that appeared throughout their stationery. The translucent layer offered a soft reveal - a hint of what was inside, like a whisper of the day to come. That small detail (consistent, understated, and intentional) became the quiet thread that ran through the entire wedding design, from save the date to signage.

How we designed it

When everything came together on the day, it felt effortless, not because there was less, but because every detail had purpose.

At the entrance, the welcome sign/order of the day set the tone immediately with minimal wording, clean layout, a hint of lavender mirrored from the invitation suite. Guests knew exactly where to go next, quietly guiding the flow of events without taking away from the setting. Next to it, the seating chart let guests find their places at The Arches feasting tables with ease.

Each table number and name card echoed the same design language - the handwritten type, the balanced spacing, the textured card stock. And the smaller signs for cards, gifts and the guest book gently tied every corner together.

Nothing shouted for attention, yet everything felt cohesive.

Where the stationery came to life

There’s something quietly powerful about stationery that doesn’t try too hard. Simple, minimal design gives every element room to breathe, and that calmness translates to how the entire day feels.

For this lavender-inspired suite, simplicity meant focus. The absence of colour allowed the texture of the cotton paper and the beauty of the line art to stand out. The magnet Save the Dates were practical but elegant; the vellum belly band added softness without clutter.
Minimal design doesn’t mean less emotion, it often means more intention. Every detail is there for a reason, and every piece speaks the same visual language. It’s an approach that works beautifully for couples who want their day to feel personal, graceful and grounded.

Why Simplicity Always Wins

If you’re dreaming of stationery that feels calm, cohesive and quietly beautiful, here are a few design principles that always help:

> Keep typography consistent. Two fonts are enough; one for personality, one for clarity.
> Limit colour. Let paper texture and white space do the talking.
> Repeat one subtle motif. It might be a monogram, line illustration, or botanical accent. Carry it through every piece.
> Think functionally. Save the Dates that double as magnets, signage that doubles as décor = beauty with purpose.
> Finish with a tactile detail. A vellum wrap, ribbon, or seal can elevate without overwhelming.
